No need to travel to enjoy an outstanding evening reminiscent of South East China only two steps from the Eiffel Tower. The prestigious Shangri-La Paris palace is hosting a jewel : the Shang Palace, a Chinese restaurant that has been awarded one star by the Guide Michelin and 3 toques at the Gault & Millau.
We have been delighted by an exceptional dinner in the romantic setting of this starred restaurant, with a complete change of scenery in a place that seems to be unaffected by the passing of time. The Shangri-La is well known across the world for its Asian art of hospitality. The Shang Palace is a clear demonstration of this.
The place refinement can be seen upon arrival. As a chest, the wood doors with Chinese patterns are opening on a setting made of silks finely embroidered, mahogany wooden windscreen open work, jade panels, precious velvets and massive chandeliers. Alcoves and crannies behind those windscreens are bringing a lot of intimacy to the overall atmosphere. Everybody would feel good there.
Following a warm welcome, we have been escorted to our table. Based on the number of options available in the menu, we have asked for some advises that were particularly meant. A great thanks to our host that made us travel through the Cantonese traditions.
We have started our dinner with the “Lo Hei” Salmon. It is a generous plate of salmon sashimi surrounded by fine fruits and vegetables strips, as well as a julienne of jellyfish. At first, this dish setup echoes a flower. Then, all ingredients are melted together with a sesame seeds sauce. Following an age-old tradition, this dish is prepared for the Chinese New Year. It is at that time that wishes, such as health, love and prosperity, are exchanged. A perfect way to initiate this evening!
To go on, we have selected the sweet and sour pork and the barbecue meat combination. We have added the wok fried snow beads with fungus, fried taro and sweet potatoes. As for the rest of the menu, those dishes can be shared thus allowing you to discover several recipes. This is quite good as the number of options (around 80) is as extended as appealing.
As for the “Lo Hei” salmon, we have been delighted with each bite! The sweet and sour pork is obviously the best we ever had. The barbecue includes chicken marinated with superior soy sauce, roasted duck Cantonese style and crispy pork brisket. Several sauces are available to enhance their taste. Again, a delight with highly tender meats beyond our expectations.
As a side dish, the wok fried snow beads were perfect. It is a large assortment of vegetables arranged in a bird nest made of taro and sweet potatoes. This dish was nice to see and good to taste.
This highly refined feast made us forget, during that evening, that we were in Paris, only two steps from the Seine river and the Eiffel Tower. The cuisine, the Imperial Palace luxurious felted setting and the hosts’ kindness made us travel through distant lands, while being in one of the most beautiful palaces of Paris, the Shangri-La. Magic!
For those that would like to meet in a private setting, the Dynasty Tang lounge can be privatized. This lounge offers the same level of refinement as the main dining room of the Shang Palace.
