Arrival at the hotel
The arrival at the Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly is a real enchantment. You go through the Chantilly forest and then along the majestic Château de Chantilly. You’ll really have the time to enjoy the view as the paved road doesn’t really allow driving too fast. Then you cross the city door and the hotel is on the right.
The doorman appeared straight away. He was very friendly and took all our luggage immediately and escorted us to the lobby desk. The check-in was smooth. A lady offered to show us our room. She explained to us the multiple features of the hotel : restaurants and spa. Then we arrived at our room on the first floor, facing the Château de Chantilly garden. I have to say that going through the hotel corridors, taking the elevator and then discovering the room is a really special experience. All has been decorated with a lot of refinement.
The room
Our room was a deluxe room with park view. This is the second category. It is a bit larger than the first one and offers a view on the Château de Chantilly park. We had a nice view on a pool with a water jet thus allowing us to hear a soft water noise.
The room is large enough. You have some space to store your luggage. Then there is a large cabinet for the clothes.
The marble bathroom with a large bathtub including rain shower is really nice. You have separated WC next to the bathroom.
As the hotel was recently built, it feels very new even if the decoration is quite classic. From the carpet to the small blue pillows on the bed, we loved the decoration. Makes you feel like a king in his castle!
We had a good sleep in the large bed. It is very comfortable. When we got into the room after the restaurant show, we felt like it might be difficult to sleep as we had eaten a lot but everything went well, pretty smooth! The bed had been prepared while we were away and another minor detail that makes you feel somewhere special, there was a small cloth on the carpet so that you don’t walk directly on the carpet while getting out of the bed.
Another funny detail, there is a small light next to the bathroom that you can turn on from the bed. It allows going to the bathroom during the night while not turning on the whole room light. A detail again but very useful!
Catering
We tried the 2 star restaurant La Table du Connétable which is located inside the hotel on the lobby floor, next to the courtyard. When you enter into the restaurant, you are directly greeted by the head waiter. Then he offered us a table that was quite convenient for us, with a nice view on the kitchen.
You probably believe that for a 2 star restaurant, the bill will be starred as well. And no, it wasn’t! You don’t go every day in a starred restaurant and this one really deserves the money it costs. We don’t drink a lot so it was just a cup of champagne and then one bottle of water.
Then I took the menu and my wife selected meals à la carte. We ate for around 100 € / guest. Generally speaking, this is expensive but way below what a lot of starred restaurants are asking for, especially if you count the number of items served and their overall quality!
While you sit down, you don’t really expect the dinner you’ll enjoy in few minutes. It is a real show from the beginning to the end!
Here is what we have tried :
- Duck foie gras pan-fried with beetroot : was really good
- Pigeon from Pornic : my wife liked it, it was cooked with licorice juice, special but tasty.
- Suckling Lamb from Pyrenees : came with mushrooms and wheat puree (amazing puree), was nice!
- The Cuba Chocolate : this is a souffle with exotic fruits, it is just the best I ever had and it had the right balance between chocolate flavor power and the sugar.
- The Raspberry : almond and rosemary crispy biscuit, really nice looking and quite tasty.
If you ask us what we have preferred at the restaurant : the desserts, the foie gras and the service! The service was outstanding. A lot of small meals are brought between the courses and these are really delicious.
The breakfast can be taken in the Jardin d’Hiver, also next to the courtyard. The breakfast buffet offers a large selection of salt and sweet options.
Activities
There is a spa located just below the courtyard. The Auberge du Jeu de Paume Spa is operated in cooperation with Valmont. As we stayed there during the week, the spa area was almost dedicated to us. We saw maybe 2 others guests during our stay. The swimming pool area is really nice, decorated with its Moorish style. The pool temperature is perfect, no issue to enter into it! You’ll enjoy relaxing in one of the deckchair. Nice touch, there is a bar next to the pool where you can prepare a tea and have few dried fruits with it. Some fresh fruit juices are also complimentary available and very tasty!
The Valmont Spa at Auberge du Jeu de Paume features a sauna and a hammam. The nice thing is that you have one of each for the men and one of each for the women. Those who don’t like to be mixed will appreciate. The blue tones of the hammam are really nice. There is also a fitness room inside the spa Valmont but we haven’t tried it. It has a good number of equipment.
We tried the signature treatment “Mille & Une Chantilly” (Thousand and One Chantilly), it was a nice experience! The overall treatment lasts 90 minutes. It starts with an exfoliating treatment, then you will enjoy a relaxing massage (this is the part I preferred) and the last part is a whipped cream body mask. This body mask is really unusual, I don’t think you can find this anywhere else in the world. It is a bit surprising at the beginning but then you feel ok and at the end, the skin is really soft. You end this treatment with a small pastry prepared by the Auberge du Jeu de Paume Pastry Chef Ophélie Bares, this is the right way to complete this relaxing time.
We also enjoyed a drink in the very cozy bar in front of the Chantilly Castle Gardens. As we had to go, it was too early to taste the tea time. As it looks so tempting, it would be for the next time…
Conclusion
We had a pleasant one night stay at the Auberge du Jeu de Paume in Chantilly. Our departure was as smooth as the check-in. The doorman exceeded our expectations by giving us two fresh bottles of water with a large smile, when small attention makes the difference and leaves the best feeling while leaving.
