The Mercure Lille Metropole hotel is located in the city of Marcq en Baroeul, in the suburbs of Lille. It is easily reachable as it is next to an exit of the A22 highway that connects Lille to Belgium. Lille city center can be reached in less than 15 minutes.
Arrival at the hotel
First positive fact about this hotel, it has a large free parking which is quite convenient. The building has 4 levels with 25 rooms per level.
The hotel lobby is really large. Cars are regularly displayed there (this gives you an idea on how spacious it is).
After multiple stays in this hotel, I can tell you that the desk staff is quite efficient. We hardly wait here. So, on this beginning of February, after an online booking, I get my key in less than two minutes.
The Privilege Room
The Privilege room is the higher room category for the Mercure brand. If you compare it to the Standard room, the Privilege room includes few additional items such as an iPhone dock station (useful to charge the battery and listen to a playlist), bathrobes, slippers, free softs in the minibar and a Nespresso machine.
Another key point, the Privilege rooms have been recently renovated and this is easily seen. The decoration was redesigned to be warmer. It is a bit different from the regular white walls.
From a room size point of view, I can’t see any difference between the Standard and the Privilege rooms.
For the soundproofing, no issue to report, the hotel is not really busy during the week end so it is very quiet. I suggest opting for a room on the garden side rather than the parking side.
For the cleanliness, it was really clean. A bit of dust on the iPhone dock station but nothing critical and overall, the room was clean.
The bathroom is well designed. Even if the bathroom isn’t so large, the bathtub is very large and convenient. It is a pleasure to use it. It can easily welcome two persons.
The only little issue we had with this room was the heat. Even with the heater turned off, it was tuff to lower the temperature.
The bedding of the Privilege room is of good quality with a queen size bed. We can highlight the availability of memory foam pillows. I am not a big fan as I find those too hard but some will appreciate this.
Catering
There is brasserie “L’Europe” and a bar “L’Ascot” inside the hotel. The breakfast is served at the brasserie. We can find there a large buffet with a very good quality and diversity : muffins, waffles, crepes and all the classics from the cheese to the cold cut and the Viennese pastries. There is also fresh orange juice. You can order on demand and without any additional cost eggs cooked in multiple fashions (fried egg, hard-boiled egg, scrambled egg, etc…).
What I really liked with this breakfast is that everything was pretty fresh. Then the quality price ratio of this breakfast is awesome. With an internet rate of 14 €, you have there a buffet worthy of a brunch. I know others hotels in the region that offers a breakfast that costs more than 20 € with a restricted buffet.
The bar is really nice with sofas and chairs around the fireplace. It is really warm. After a drink, we had a dinner at the Ascot, which is the hotel restaurant during the week end. The menu includes classic and local dishes. There is something for every taste, from the salad to the most generous dish. But you need to know, that in the North of France, the cuisine is usually quite generous. So even with a starter costing less than 10 €, you can expect a full plate. We have tried the fish and chips and the tartar steak, both were really tasty. It wasn’t starred cuisine, but really good both from a quality and quantity standpoint, especially if you think about the price of the dishes.
The room service is also convenient. I tried the pastas with pesto sauce. The pastas were properly cooked and the pesto tasty.
So, the Mercure Lille Metropole has a comprehensive catering offering. It is a nice place to have a meal in Marcq en Baroeul where it is quite easy to park.
Activities
The hotel has a small fitness room with few equipment and a sauna. It isn’t really large but as you usually don’t have this kind of service in a hotel of this category, it is a positive point to highlight.
Conclusion
This hotel offers a very good quality for price ratio. It is easy to reach it and you can eat there which is quite convenient as there aren’t a lot of others options in the area around beside head offices. It is the only 4 star hotel in this area. Then you can go to Lille or even further but then the access isn’t so convenient.
During the week, most of the hotel customers are business related. This is the main share of the activity and families and couples during the week end.
